I was born in Kilnsey and continued to live in the village where previous generations of my family were also born. My early working career was spent in the pharmaceutical industry, which offered me the opportunity for extensive travel. Nevertheless I always looked forward to returning to the Dales and very much appreciate the privilege of living in this part of the world. After 20 years in the pharma-industry I left to set up my own gardening business, working extensively in the Dales. I have endeavoured to contribute to the life of the community and I am currently chairman of the local Parish Council. I have also played cricket and rugby for local teams and for many years represented both Yorkshire and England in womens cricket.
Whilst fully acknowledging the beauty of the Dales, I also recognise the competing and often conflicting interests to which the Dales are subject. Maintaining the beauty of the landscape with a diverse interest of local people, industry and tourism is a challenge which will not go away. However, it is the sustainability of the Dales that I consider to be crucial in ensuring that the area remains a vibrant community and still retains its traditional character, of
which we can be proud, and one where the views of local people are fully respected in the decision-making process.
